Where Do I Learn to Dive?
Scuba diving centers are located all over the country, even in areas with no ocean nearby. You can often learn to scuba dive wherever you are with the use of a lake, river, or another body of water. If you prefer to lean in an ocean, you can take the practical portion of your certification in your hometown and then visit a tropical locale, like Maui, to do the open water diving portion.
How Fit Do I Need to Be?
You don’t have to be overly fit scuba dive, but there are some fitness requirements. You have to be at least ten years old. You also need to have a medical release from your physician if you suffer or have suffered from a serious medical condition in the past. You also will be expected to have the ability to swim 200 yards and tread water or float for 10 minutes at a time.
How Do I Learn?
You only need to complete a short course to receive your certification to scuba dive. The first part involves answering quizzes or exams about important aspects of the sport. The second section is a confined water dive. You’ll be doing these in a pool or similar location. You’ll need to show skill in controlling your buoyancy, breathing underwater, and removing your mask while submerged. The last stage of the course involves dives in the ocean or a lake. You will be allowed to explore the underwater world with your instructor nearby. If you show the skills needed, you’ll be certified.
